Samantha Sirimanne Hyde was born in Sri Lanka and now lives in Australia. She enjoys dabbling in short fiction, free verse, haiku, tanka and other Japanese poetry forms.

The upper verse establishes the thematic and seasonal context while the use of syntactic parallelism in the lower verse reveals the lived reality of a diasporic identity -- "neither here nor there at one and the same time." On second reading, the "tropical heat" effectively carries metaphoric significance.
