Starting with a wide setting, then moving into its subject of a “willow” in the “storm”, but it isn't the storm that “lashes out” this time. Here is the way to make your haiku stand out from other haiku, presenting things in a different light to your readers. Had Julie said new moon—/the storm lashes out/at a willow, the end-result effect would certainly not be the same.
