One Man's Maple Moon: Valley Tanka by Paul Williamson

English Original

the valley
has never looked darker
it draws me in
around it the plains are clear
the way I want my path

its own place: a mindscape of tanka, 2018

Paul Williamson

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

山谷
從未看起來更陰暗
它吸引了我
周圍的平原視野很清晰
這是我想要走的道路

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

山谷
从未看起来更阴暗
它吸引了我
周围的平原视野很清晰
这是我想要走的道路

  1. Juxtaposed with this gloomy prefatory image of the valley of darkness, the thought-provoking closing statement reveals the speaker's vision of life, something that he can immerse himself in with religion-like conviction, sincerity and total commitment. Paul's reflective tanka reminds me of the following biblical verse:

I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won't be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd's rod makes me feel safe... Psalm 23:4
