One Man's Maple Moon: Heart Tanka by Sylvia Forges-Ryan

We talk about
which one of us will stay
who will go
the stone in my heart
when did it become my heart

  1. Structured into two parts, written in five poetic phrases (ku), and through a pivot (L3) that foreshadows an emotional twist at the end of the poem, Sylvia's tanka effectively builds, poetic phrase/line by poetic phrase/line, to a thematically significant and emotionally powerful ending that reveals the contradictory meanings of "heart."
