Samantha Sirimanne Hyde was born in Sri Lanka and now lives in Australia. She enjoys dabbling in short fiction, free verse, haiku, tanka and other Japanese poetry forms.

Evaluated in the context of diaspora literature, the thematically significant and emotionally resonant juxtaposition of the Indian "ocean" and one's "identity" works effectively, and on second reading, the last line, "yet again," adds emotional weight and psychological depth to the poem. Samantha's heartfelt haiku reminds me of one of my published haiku on a similar topic:

    Pacific shore...
    a tidal wave speaking
    my mother tongue
