One Man's Maple Moon: Patience Tanka by Sally Biggar

English Original

with the patience
of those owls perched
on my porch
I listen for the sound
of your footsteps

Gusts, Spring/Summer 2018

Sally Biggar

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

那些貓頭鷹
耐心地
棲息在門廊
我傾聽並等待
你的腳步聲

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

那些猫头鹰
耐心地
栖息在门廊
我倾听并等待
你的脚步声

Bio Sketch

Sally Biggar recently (and very reluctantly) left Port Townsend, Washington and moved back to her native state of Maine. She delights in re-discovering the peninsulas and coves of the Maine coast after being away for 25 years. Her tanka can be found in the usual places online, and in print journals and anthologies.

  1. Sally's tanka builds, line by line, to a relatable and emotionally significant ending that reveals the theme of waiting/patience in a relationship, and her fine tanka reminds me of the following poem dealing with a similar theme in a different tone:

    porch light
still on for my husband ...
    do these moths
    gather around
    for its comfort too?
