Cool Announcement: A Freebie, Nurses’ Voices: Stories of courage and determination in the face of COVID-19

My Dear Friends:

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) and rabble.ca have partnered together to produce Nurses’ Voices: Stories of courage and determination in the face of COVID-19, a collection of stories which chronicles Canadian nurses’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic (It's available as a free download here)

Nurses’ Voices puts the sacrifices Canadian healthcare workers made during this time in sharp focus. Many nurses needed to be isolated from families during the pandemic, worked extended hours with little to no time off, and grappled with the heartache of witnessing loss close-up as patients succumbed to the virus.

The book highlights over 25 voices from healthcare workers across the country as they recount their memories of the pandemic over the past three years.

To date, over 200,000 health care workers have been infected with COVID-19. Many struggled to recover; others continue to suffer from long COVID. And sadly, over 50 healthcare workers have died.

And I would like to share with you my poems below written for/about these courageous frontline healthcare workers:

Forty-Fourth Entry, Coronavirus Poetry Diary

a tired nurse
opens the bedside window
my friend's voice
flows in with the night breeze
as his mother's eyes close

PoemHunter, May 2 2020

One Hundred Thirty-Ninth Entry

at false dawn
a double-shift nurse murmurs
to another ...
just like Dawn of the Dead
only the credits never roll

PoemHunter, November 22 220

Three Hundred and Twelfth Entry

time to learn
to live with Covid-19
on the news ticker ...
a nurse turns off the TV
and starts her midnight rounds

NeverEnding Story, February 10 2022

written for frontline healthcare workers

midnight moon
a nurse tucks in
another’s hair
