sunlight flickers
through lattice
our mother smiles
over uneven cake slices
still dividing and ruling

Bio Sketch
Samantha
Sirimanne Hyde was born in Sri Lanka and now lives in Australia. She
enjoys dabbling in short fiction, free verse, haiku, tanka and other
Japanese poetry forms.
Samantha's tanka effectively builds, poetic phrase(ku)/line by poetic phrase (ku)/line, to an unexpected and unsettling ending that reveals the theme of power dynamics within the family.
