Poetic Musings: Alone in a Crowd Tanka by Kenneth Tanemura

alone in a crowd
even the seat
in this café
doesn’t
fit

The Tanka Anthology, 2003

Kenneth Tanemura

Commentary: Kenneth Tanemura takes this cliche, "alone in a crowd," and refreshes it in a comic way: "even the seat/ in this café/ doesn’t/ fit." He effectively builds this sense of isolation/loneliness by decreasing syllables with each line. The last two lines/words (three syllables in total) strike the reader hard.
