she brings me
a bouquet of white roses
on my 70th --
how to speak to a daughter
of long-lost innocence

在我七十歲生日時
她帶給我
一束白玫瑰 --
怎麼跟失去純真已久的女兒
再度談心

Bio Sketch
Carole
MacRury resides in Point Roberts, Washington, a unique peninsula and
border town that inspires her work. She is the author of In the Company of Crows: Haiku and Tanka Between the Tides (Black Cat Press, 2008, 2nd Printing, 2018) and The Tang of Nasturtiums, an award-winning e-chapbook (Snapshot Press 2012).
The contrasts, thematic, emotional and symbolic, between the two parts of this middle-of-the-story birthday/relationship tanka are poignantly effective, and this weighty L5 sparks the reader's emotions and deepens/reshapes the understanding the meaning(s)/significance of the birthday gift, "a bouquet of white roses."
