late summer rain
this green, green grass
oh! … glistening
surrounds our new house
and the old oak stump

  1. Denis's arrangement of the images ("late summer" rain, glistering grass, a new house, and the old oak "stump") in a dialectically contrasting manner makes the tanka visually and emotionally effective, and these symbolically rich, contrasting images successfully add significance, thematic and emotional, to his tanka.
