One Man's Maple Moon: Storm Cellar Tanka by Denis M. Garrison

English Original

we rise again
from the storm cellar …
only traces
of the house remain
yet all of us are home

Denis M. Garrison

  1. Ls 1-4 show the effects, physical and financial, of a natural disaster on the speaker's family; however, the shift, thematic and emotional, in L5 sparks the reader's emotions and reflection on the priorities in life.

And his tanka below could be read as a sequel:

    late summer rain
    this green, green grass
    oh! … glistening
    surrounds our new house
    and the old oak stump
