Thematically speaking, the narrator's feeling/sense of the passage of time is effectively explored in this understated haiku, and technically speaking, the description of a cherry blossom falling in the pool functions more like, in T.S. Eliot's terminology, an "objective correlative" for the mood of the narrator.
