Gene Murtha, a naturalist and poet, sponsored and judged the first
haiku contest for the inner city children of Camden, NJ., for the
Virgilio Group, of which he was a lifetime member. He was widely published
for his work in haikai literature from the USA to Japan.
On one hand, the tone and mood of this heartwrenchingly poignant statement in the upper verse is greatly enhanced by the implied similes in the lower verse; on the other hand, these similes spark the reader's reflection on human death in relation to the cyclical progression in the natural world.
