One Man's Maple Moon: Stillborn Tanka by H. Gene Murtha

English Original

how useless
these hospital gifts
for a stillborn ...
a withered leaf,
a fallen feather

Biding Time: Selected Poems 2001-2013, 2013

H. Gene Murtha

  1. On one hand, the tone and mood of this heartwrenchingly poignant statement in the upper verse is greatly enhanced by the implied similes in the lower verse; on the other hand, these similes spark the reader's reflection on human death in relation to the cyclical progression in the natural world.
