Martha's tanka effectively builds, poetic phrase (ku)/line by poetic phrase (ku)/line, to a thematically significant and emotionally powerful narrative twist in the last line that has the most weight and reveals the anti-war theme, alluding to an anti-war slogan commonly associated with the American counterculture of the 1960s.
