on the beach
kicking a soccer ball
a day with no goal
then strolling in the boardwalk
should we start a family?

Bio Sketch
Neal Whitman lives in Pacific Grove, California, with his wife, Elaine. Neal is the haiku editor for Pulse: Voices from the Heart of Medicine and is Vice President of the United Haiku and Tanka Society.
Combined with the literary device of double entendre, the pivotal line, "a day with no goal," not only provides a connection, thematic and emotional, between the two parts of the tanka, but also sparks the reader's reflection on the (first and foremost) goal in one's life.
