Bio Sketch
Brian Zimmer wrote from the banks of the Mississippi River
in St. Louis, Missouri. His work had appeared in various
international print and online journals. He took inspiration from a variety of
sources, including the ancient Japanese poetic-diary (utanikki) and free-form,
poetic "essay" (zuihitsu).
Modeled on traditional Japanese tanka, this thought-provoking poem is made up of five poetic phrases and structured into two parts with a pivot. Brian uses a rare verb ("unpetals") to enhance the visual aspect of the opening image, and the thought-provoking phrase, "death's perfection/fleeting," especially the concluding word, adds emotional weight and psychological depth to the poem.
