at the temple
the hum of chanting
before meditation,
over the curved veranda
the twinkling of city lights

Bio Sketch
Samantha
Sirimanne Hyde was born in Sri Lanka and now lives in Australia. She
enjoys dabbling in short fiction, free verse, haiku, tanka and other
Japanese poetry forms.
Enhanced by the contemplative pivot, "before meditation," the contrasts (the religious/spiritual vs the secular/humanist; the auditory vs the visual; ...) between the two parts of the tanka spark the reader's reflection on the dynamics between religiosity/spirituality and urban life.
