Bio Sketch
Elena Calvo started journaling and writing poetry at the age of seven in
her native land, Spain. She writes lyric poetry, essays, aphorisms,
haiku and tanka in both English and Spanish. Her work has appeared in
different anthologies published in Canada, as well as in OIW, HC, KaDo
and Gusts.
The contrast between L1 (consoling) and L4(sudden burst of anger), and the comparison between Ls 2&3 (a mass shooting targets the gay people) and Ls 4&5 (sudden burst of anger at something trivial) make this tanka thematically significant and emotionally effective. And Ls 4&5 subtly reveal the psychological impacts of this mass killing described in Ls 2&3.
ReplyDeleteNote: "On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a mass shooting inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States."
