One Man's Maple Moon: Snow Banks Tanka by Thelma Mariano

English Original

tonight I walk
between glistening snow banks
past and future
the river so silent
as I choose my steps

Thelma Mariano

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

今晚我漫步
在閃閃發光的雪堤之間
思索過去和未來
當我決定自己的步伐時
發現這條河太安靜了

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

今晚我漫步
在闪闪发光的雪堤之间
思索过去和未来
当我决定自己的步伐时
发现这条河太安静了

  1. Thematically speaking, Thelma's tanka is about walking meditation that describes the speaker's meditation on temporality (the personal sense of time, past/future, L3, and this moment, "here and now"," of choosing the steps, Ls 4-5) while walking between glistening snow banks (Ls 1&2).

And spiritually/philosophically speaking, a walking meditation is designed to bring body(Ls 1&2) and mind (Ls 3-5) in sync while one is out and about, and this mindfulness practice involves "focusing closely on the physical experience of walking (Ls 1-2; walk between "glistening snow banks"), paying attention to the "specific components of each step (Ls 4&5).
