jolted awake
by a recurring nightmare:
my body floats
in a world of styrofoam balls
dotted with red spikes

a sudden rise
in breakthrough cases ...
hush of leaf fall

a long line
at the checkout counter
as sunlight slants in
the masked cashier smiles
with her hazel eyes
