Special Feature: Haiku and Tanka Selected for Loss Moms

Dear Readers/Friends:

Today is Mother's Day,  a day of honoring mothers and grandmothers for their contributions to our families, communities and society.

However, I would like to do something different: sharing the following poems with you as a way to honor and validate the motherhood of those who have also experienced pregnancy and child loss.

snowdrops ...
the first ultrasound
becomes the last

Tia Haynes

stillborn son
the quilt comes apart
in her hands

Roberta Beary

slanted winter light
in the basement
a crib gathers dust

Chen-ou Liu

first Mother's Day
after her long-awaited child
was stillborn ...
her arms and her heart
empty and emptier

Chen-ou Liu

Added: written for immigrant mothers on Mother's Day

my friend's mother
speaks a little English
constrained
in a small bungalow, and yet
her dream grows big, bigger
