Bio Sketch

Isabella Mori lives on the unceded, traditional, ancestral lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh, is the founder of Muriel’s Journey Poetry Prize, and the author of three books of and about poetry, including Not So Pretty Haiku. They write pretty much everything that’s not nailed down.

1 comment:

  1. The visually, emotionally, and tonally evocative scene of Ls 1&2 is sharply contrasted against that of aggressively majestic and militarily mighty L3.

This surprise ending highlights the geopolitical significance of the "Arabian Sea, a Middle East flashpoint."

And what's left unsaid is Far More Important than what's is stated.

Isabella's timely and sociopolitically relevant haiku reminds me of the following mark:

In a war situation or where violence and injustice are prevalent, "poetry is called upon to be something more than a thing of beauty."
    -- Seamus Heaney

In contrast with my "traditional" "sea haiku" below, which was written during peace time:

    the endless blue
    of the Aegean Sea ...
    smell of summer

FYI: The aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, is currently patrolling the Arabian Sea, just east of the Gulf of Aden where the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been attacking military and merchant ships allegedly tied to Israel.

And New York Post, Oct. 1: US sends "SECOND aircraft carrier group" to Middle East – here are all the military assets in the region, accessed at https://nypost.com/2024/10/01/us-news/all-the-us-military-assets-in-the-middle-east-as-israel-iran-tensions-flare/
