yesterday's rain
today’s humidity
my heart
erratic as Delhi’s monsoon
each time I think of you

Bio Sketch
Aruna
Rao is primarily trained in visual arts. Her love for anime led her to
haiku and tanka which helped her give shape to moments. She has only
recently started submitting to journals and her tanka have been
published both online and in print.
This heartfelt tanka is made up of five poetic phrases (equivalent to five ku of 5-7-5-7-7) and structured into two parts ("jo," the preface, Ls 1&2, and the main statement, Ls 3-5, a simile that articulates the emotional point of the poem). In the tanka, the prefatory image ("ushin jo") resonates closely with the emotional point of the poem. Aruna effectively builds the tanka, phrase/line (ku) by phrase/line (ku), to an emotionally powerful ending that has the most weight and reveals the theme of the uncertainty of love.
