The unexpected yet emotionally powerful last line not only lifts the poem up a notch, but also sparks the reader's reflection on the relationship between imagination/curiosity and creativity. Alan's brilliantly crafted "ladder to northern lights" haiku reminds me of one of my favorite Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings, "Ladder to the Moon," which can be viewed at http://www.georgiaokeeffe.net/ladder-to-the-moon.jsp
