Bio Sketch
 
Elena Calvo started journaling and writing poetry at the age of seven in her native land, Spain. She writes lyric poetry, essays, aphorisms, haiku and tanka in both English and Spanish. Her work has appeared in different anthologies published in Canada, as well as in OIW, HC, KaDo and Gusts.

The contrast between L1 (consoling) and L4(sudden burst of anger), and the comparison between Ls 2&3 (a mass shooting targets the gay people) and Ls 4&5 (sudden burst of anger at something trivial) make this tanka thematically significant and emotionally effective. And Ls 4&5 subtly reveal the psychological impacts of this mass killing described in Ls 2&3.
