The multi-sensorily evocative imagery of Ls 2-5 makes this middle-of-the-story, new life tanka fresh and emotionally effective, and on a second reading, scene-setting L1, "beyond" "white walls," not only adds symbolic significance to the tanka, but also elevates it to the figurative level about living/experiencing beyond the confines of one's lifeworld (or life-world; German: Lebenswelt).
