Born in Newport, Wales in 1988, Gareth Nuren has been writing poetry since his teenage years and has spent his most recent years focusing on writing Senryu and Haiku and has had nearly one-hundred pieces published in fourteen countries.
L1, "new year," functions as a kigo, immediately setting time and mood, while in Ls 2&3, the “old car” "breathing in the cold"/misty morning morning breath works well on two levels, literal and figurative. This concrete image subtly suggests age, persistence, and beginnings that aren’t shiny or new—very fitting for New Year.
