Dave Read is a Canadian poet living in Calgary. He writes short poems with an emphasis on the Japanese genres of haiku, senryu, tanka, and haibun. L1, "mountain path ...," establishes the physical setting, while Ls 2&3, "I slip a little / into the past," reveal the speaker's inward response. The word "slip" does double duty: it refers both to a slight physical misstep on the trail and to an effortless movement into memory. Walking a mountain path often evokes recollections, so the transition from the external landscape to the inner one feels natural, subtle, and grounded.
