L1 sketches a gloomy scene, effectively setting the tone and mood of the haiku and better providing a "scent link" (in Basho's sense of the phrase) to L2, and more importantly, the ending with no visually evocative, symbolically rich and life-renewing "spring rain" (L3)further darkens this "starless night," L1.
