One Man's Maple Moon: White Roses Tanka by Carole MacRury

English Original

she brings me
a bouquet of white roses
on my 70th --
how to speak to a daughter
of long-lost innocence

Carole MacRury

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

在我七十歲生日時
她帶給我
一束白玫瑰 --
怎麼跟失去純真已久的女兒
再度談心

Chinese Translation (Simplified)

在我七十岁生日时
她带给我
一束白玫瑰 --
怎么跟失去纯真已久的女儿
再度谈心

  1. The contrasts, thematic, emotional and symbolic, between the two parts of this middle-of-the-story birthday/relationship tanka are poignantly effective, and this weighty L5 sparks the reader's emotions and deepens/reshapes the understanding the meaning(s)/significance of the birthday gift, "a bouquet of white roses."
