Commentary: Within such a short space of 17 words, Doris Kasson's tanka builds, poetic phrase (ku)/line by poetic phrase (ku)/line, to an unexpected yet thematicaly significant and visually and emotionally poignant ending that reveals the theme of workplace relationship tinged with both surprise and sadness in L5: surprise that someone so close has such secrets (Ls 4&5) and sadness that those secrets are not shared (L5).
