  1. Robert’s tanka effectively builds, poetic phrase (ku)/line by poetic phrase (ku)/line, to an emotional ending with a thematic twist ("every thorn removed") possessing potent symbolic significance, which reminds me of the following two remarks on rose thorns:


    If you enjoy the fragrance of a rose, you must accept the thorns which it bears.
