Poetic Musings: Dawn Tanka by Amelia Fielden

dawn would be sad
if it weren't for the birds
singing me awake
another dreary day
if it weren't for the birds

These Purple Years, 2018

Amelia Fielden

Commentary: Enhanced by the creative use of repetition ("if it weren't for the birds" in Ls 2 and5), the juxtaposition of mood ([personified]"dawn would be sad" and [the speaker's] "another dreary day") effectively emphasizes and re-contextualizes the value of birdsong to the depressed speaker, sparking the reader's reflection on the relationship between human needs and nature.
