Guy Simser: A Gusts
tanka journal Selection Committee member since 2006, Guy has written
Japanese form poems since 1980, including his five years in Tokyo
(Canadian Embassy). Published in eight countries, his poetry awards,
among others include: Carleton University Prize; Diane Brebner Prize;
AHA Tanka Splendor Prize; Hekinan International Haiku Special Prize.
Guy's one-sentence, middle-of-the-story tanka effectively builds, poetic phrase/line by poetic phrase/line, to a visually and emotionally powerful ending that reveals the Proustian theme of "remembrance of things past/innocent," and the opening of "this old shoe-box" (L4) structurally and symbolically functions like a Proustian moment that inspires a "nostalgic incident of involuntary memory (Ls 2,3,and 5)."
