A Room of My Own: The Edge Tanka

One Hundred Eighty-Third Entry, Coronavirus Poetry Diary

in the clinic
on the edge of my chair
waiting for results
I'm alone, surrounded
by masked men and women

Added: One Hundred Eighty-Fourth Entry

even when I'm not alone ...
in TV's light
a masked patient grasps
for his last breath of faith

Added: inspired by the Loser-In-Chief 's "fiery speech" at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)

EXIT at the end
of a psych ward hallway
a Trump fan cries
louder than his shadow
I'll beat them for a third time

Note: Trump then claimed that Biden did lose the White House in 2020 and floated another run for office. "Actually you know they just lost the White House, I may even decide to beat them for a third time," he said. Newsweek, Feb. 28 2021

  1. It might be interesting to do a comparative reading of my "New year" haiku sequence below with the "for a third time" tanka:

    "The End of the Beginning"

to Trump Party faithfuls, including Trump himself and the Trumps in the wall-to-wall mirrors of his presidential suite in the Trump Tower.

    dying of the year
his face shadowed by the brim
    of a MAGA hat

    new year's clean-up
a pile of "Four More Years"
    dumped on the curbside

    "2024 run"
in a world of falling snow
    the sound of wind
