  1. There are two possible readings of Jane's creatively crafted gull haiku with multi-sensory L2 as a pivot:

    I

    low tide
    in the gull's footprints

    echoes of flight

    In this shasei version, the reader sees seawater fill the gull's footprints while the gull soars high into the sky.

    II

    low tide

    in the gull's footprints
    echoes of flight

    "[E]choes of flight" can be read literally or figuratively: multi-sensory L2 is a vivid description of the sound of the gull's wings reverberating or a mental image about a memory of the gull's soaring into the sky, which adds emotional weight and psychological depth to the haiku.
