Bio Sketch

LeRoy Gorman lives in Napanee, Ontario. His poetry, much of it minimalist and visual, has appeared in publications and exhibitions worldwide. He is the author of two dozen poetry books and chapbooks. He is also the winner of the 2017 Dwarf Stars Award

  1. Leroy's haiku could be read as a humanist's subtle, yet not so subtle, critique of the role of Religion (not Faith), as implied from the use of the sign/advertisement, GOD SAVES, in Ls 2&3, in difficult times (as symbolized in L1) through the syntactic structure of Ls 2&3:

    Not the usual structure:

    some give the sign, GOD SAVES, in

    But a smoother structure:

    some give in the sign, GOD SAVES

    However, thematically and religiously speaking, "both structures mean the same thing: some give in to the religious ideology behind the SIGN": God, through the Chruch, provides comfort, support, ... in a time of crisis while the believer Never challenges/questions, i.e. gives in to, anything religious.
