Jackson
Smith is a writer and homemaker from Chicago, Il. He is a grateful
heart transplant recipient. He first started writing to cope with
isolation during the time in the hospital spent waiting for a new heart
to become available. This is his first published tanka.
The sense of loss and sadness (which is symbolically conveyed through the winter image) is temporarily eased by a hello kitty mug, one that is infused with emotional and cultural significance.
