One Man's Maple Moon: Shimmer Tanka by Martha Magenta

English Original

sometimes
a shimmer on the stair
a trace of your scent
lingers in my memory
and fills the air I breathe

The Bamboo Hut, Autumn 2016

Chinese Translation (Traditional)

有時候
樓梯上的微光
一絲你的氣味
不僅縈繞在我的記憶中
而且充滿在我呼吸的空氣中

一丝你的气味
不仅萦绕在我的记忆中
而且充满在我呼吸的空气

  1. In Simon's heartfelt tanka, a sense of longing is effectively conveyed through multi-sensory embodied images of a shimmer, trace of scent," lingering memory, and the air... And on second reading, the opening line, "sometimes," successfully adds emotional weight and psychological depth to the tanka.
