And

In a war situation or where violence and injustice are prevalent, poetry is called upon to be something more than a thing of beauty.

-- Seamus Heaney, Ireland's most renowned poet since Yeats, playwright and translator who received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature

FYI: Out of approximately 1,275 pre-war mosques in the Gaza Strip, 1,050 have been completely destroyed and 191 have been partially damaged (totaling 1,241 affected mosques). And according to  both Geneva Conventions, Protocols I and II and the Rome Statute, Article 8, bombing religious sites is considered a war crime.

And most importantly, a gentle reminder:

(FYI: this tanka could be read as the prequel to the following:

drenched
in sweat and hot tears
I push, pushing
the last line of my tanka
out into this October light 😅

You fail only if you stop writing.

Cool Announcement: A Freebie, The Eternity of Waves by Susan Constable

My Dear Readers

The award-winning e-book, The Eternity of Waves, written by NeverEnding Story contributor, Susan Constable, is available to read free online.

Selected Tanka:

the forest
the stars, the moon
all lost in fog ...
how will he find his way
from this life to the next

afterwards ...
fields of prairie grass
bend to the wind
as we walk hand in hand
along an unmarked path

after his death
the ocean comforts me
how I yearn
to inhale that depth of blue
the eternity of waves

when I cry
you cry with me ...
our river
of loss and sorrow
salting the Pacific

ocean salt
spatters the windows
by winter’s end
I peer through a haze
of might-have-beens

... and then
the click of a garden gate
on a moonless night
the sound of his footsteps
sneaking into my dream

a large bruise
deep inside the mang
unexpected
the way she turned away
when we needed her most

In a war situation or where violence and injustice are prevalent, "poetry is called upon to be something more than a thing of beauty."
-- Seamus Heaney

And

What poetry can, must, and will always do for us: it complicates us, it doesn't "soothe."
-- Jorie Graham

I would like to conclude today's "Hot News" post with the following latest entry of Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCXVII: "'relocation plan'"
written in response to Haaretz, Aug. 20,2025: Defense Minister Approves Plan to Conquer Gaza City; 130,000 IDF Reservists to Be Mobilized

"Relocation Plan"

summer odors  ...
nowhere to go, no way
to get pieces of bread

ghost town
a Gazan's mind a labyrinth
of dead bodies

FYI: Haaretz, August 22, 2025: 'Gates of Hell Will Open': Israel's Defense Minister Vows to Level Gaza City After IDF Takeover Plan Approved

And Haaretz, Oct. 9 2025: In One Month, Israeli Fire Killed Over 130 People in 'Safe Zones' Designated by the IDF

Despite designating some refugee camps in central Gaza as 'safe zones' for residents evacuating Gaza City, the IDF has continued attacking them on an almost daily basis, killing at least 130 people

Added: Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCXVIII: "bloodied keffiyeh"

a single sneaker
amid the twisted rebar
a bloodied keffiyeh

FYI: For many Palestinians, the keffiyeh symbolizes their yearning for freedom and serves a nod to their history. For some non-Palestinians, it's a show of solidarity.

one night
alone in the cold, fast river
of an adult dream
I struggle to reach the shore

even as it is spoken
the word fades...
for you, the symmetry
for me, the wings

just before he died;
in the moonlight
I draw you close to me

by moonlight
through the screen window
my lover climbs
in the darkness

the PM denies

my son can't find his glove ...

opens the doors of my ears

beyond his laughter and wit
a man who weeps

gathering speed
with each crest and curve
on this unknown road
who let cancer
behind the wheel?

on his postcard
not tears
but rain falling
in the miles between us
