To the Lighthouse: Senbun: A Satirical Haikai of Humanity

Senbun is a haikai genre that blends prose with senryu, focusing on human nature and society, often in a satirical tone. It can be seen as a playful, critical counterpart to haibun.

For example, the following extremely short senbun responds to the 2026 State of the Union—the longest in history, lasting 1 hour and 48 minutes:

Trump Empire, Inc, LXXVIII

The Gilded Drone

Castro-length blah, blah, blah …

state of the union
the air grows thick as my heart
races slow

This senbun demonstrates a thematically effective “triple-threat” structure:

1. Title: Intellectual/Historical framing

The Gilded Drone evokes historical irony, recalling the corruption and excess of the Gilded Age, while simultaneously hinting at the monotonous drone of the speech itself.

2. Prose: Casual/Dismissive satire

The four-word prose, “Castro-length blah, blah, blah …”, uses sharp historical hyperbole to deflate the event’s self-importance, employing casual, modern irreverence to comedic effect.

3. Senryu: Visceral/Internal physicality

The senryu captures a sense of “stagnant panic,” with the oxymoronic phrase “races slow” conveying a heart struggling under a suffocatingly dull atmosphere.

Poetic Musings: Lovers' Quarrel Senryu by Chen-ou Liu

we slip
into our mother tongues
lovers' quarrel

Honourable Mention, 2022 Haiku Society of America Senryu Contest

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary by the judges: The word "quarrel" is well-chosen here. This seems to be a couple that is set in their ways and are repeating a familiar fight that's been had before. There may even be a comfort in this fight, a routine or known argument, that parallels the comfort of speaking in a mother tongue. There is also the idea that when tempers flare and we lose control, that we instinctively return to what is learned during developmental years, be it a common topic or a familiar language, so maybe this couple has returned to their native language mid-fight without even realizing it. “slip” and “mother tongues” were also carefully selected for this senryu, as the senryu could lean towards a make-up kiss after a fight. Regardless, this is a great observation of human behavior.

FYI: My senryu below could be read as a response to the judges' comment: "the senryu could lean towards a make-up kiss after a fight."

A Room of My Own: Coronavirus Poetry Diary: Laughing in the Face of Adversity

After hearing the WHO announcement ("Covid-19 outbreak is a pandemic"), I started writing my Coronavirus Poetry Diary: "Laughing" in the Face of Adversity.

Fifth Entry

It is what it is

"When you believe in God, he will not give you more than you can handle; when infected with doubt during a time of crisis, you should respond by seeking the right answer to your question," the pastor said in a firm, yet affectionate tone as he accompanied me to the parking lot. In the corner of my mind, God's words lingered, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

The following day, in the shadow of this one-hundred-year-old church, I pause to wonder, “Am I as strong in the eyes of God and his mighty power as a true believer?" The path to the church entrance seems long ... and narrow. The pastor starts preaching at this much-anticipated Sunday Service.

Today's Daily Bread: First Isolation, 12:20 - 1:3

In front of a wall of giant maple leaf flags, the silver-haired retired general, who will be heading up the province's vaccine distribution task force, pauses for a while, takes a close look around the conference room, and finally rests his eyes on the youngest reporter. Then he speaks in a low, firm tone,

"People are tired and some of them even say, 'Oh, my goodness! we can't carry on.' Well, guess what --each and every one of you can! Please remember this: it is not the first time in our history that we have faced these seemingly insurmountable challenges and gotten through. Our grandfathers could storm the 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast three-quarters of a century ago. Today, we definitely can stay at home, away from everybody else for just two more weeks."

FYI: The red bat, an example of a "long distance migrant," can fly over 600 miles to its winter destination. And to the best of this covidholic's knowledge, Canada, a country with the highest rate of long term care deaths, has the most number of shameless highest-ranking politicians (Federal MPs, Senators and provincial MPPs) "caught" travelling over holidays.
