A Room of My Own: Stonehenge Tanka

a full moon
between the sarsen stones
of Stonehenge
one silhouette ghosting
across the gravel path

Added:

a thrum of rain
on the old van skylight
in a parking lot
I murmur, the life I dreamed
yet the life I'm living

Added:

flash after flash
of midnight lightning
my dream and I
rippling
in the vodka glass

Added:

words are only air
dissolving as they are said ...
yet my chest tightens
as if I’ve swallowed a rock
lodged beneath my breath

Added:

belief is a bridge
built across surging waters...
yet my shaking hands
cannot find the wooden rail
to the altar in dim light

Added:

emigration eve
the last notes
of Home Sweet Home
fading once more
into this moonless stillness

Poetic Musings: Following the Moon to the Maple Land by Chen-ou Liu

for my first Canada Day, July 1, 2003

Name: Chen-ou Liu (phonic);
Country of Birth: R.O.C.;
(Cross out R.O.C. and fill in Taiwan)
Place of Birth; Date of Birth; Sex;
simply more technocratic questions
the Immigration Officer needs to pin down my borders.
He is always looking for shortcuts,
more interested in the roadside signposts
than in the landscape that has made me.
The line he wants me confined to
is an analytically recognizable category:
immigrant. My history is meticulously stamped.
Now, you're legally a landed immigrant.
Take a copy of A Newcomer’s Introduction to Canada.

from Lake Ontario
I scoop the Taiwan moon
distant sirens

Contemporary Haibun Online, 10:2, July 2014

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary: The title and dedication, "Following the Moon to the Maple Land / for my first Canada Day, July 1, 2003," immediately establish a dual physical and symbolic journey. By grounding the piece in a specific national holiday, the author infuses the narrative with cultural resonance, allowing the historical weight of the date to speak for itself without heavy-handed exposition.

The opening lines mimic the sterile, clinical language of official immigration forms. This technical data entry stands in stark, poignant contrast to the narrator’s rich inner life. The parenthetical intrusion, "(Cross out R.O.C. and fill in Taiwan)," instantly injects geopolitical and personal complexity into the scene. Through a simple bureaucratic instruction, the text captures a profound crisis of identity, sovereignty, and displaced history.

The haibun’s emotional core lies in its central metaphor:

He is always looking for shortcuts,
more interested in the roadside signposts
than in the landscape that has made me.

In this layered yet accessible image, "signposts" represent rigid, official categories, while "landscape" embodies lived history, culture, memory, and personal identity. The strength of this passage lies in its emotional restraint. The speaker never explicitly states feelings of diminishment or alienation; instead, the prose trusts the reader to infer the subtle violence of being reduced to a bureaucratic category.

The concluding haiku delivers a powerful, unresolved finish:

from Lake Ontario
I scoop the Taiwan moon
distant sirens

Here, the moon acts as a bridge rather than a barrier. L1 anchors the speaker in their new geographical reality ("Lake Ontario"), while L2 preserves their internal, emotional geography ("Taiwan moon"). The action of "scooping" suggests an active attempt to hold onto one's heritage. Crucially, L3—"distant sirens"—cuts through any potential sentimentality. This auditory disruption yanks the reader back to an unfamiliar, urban present, serving as a reminder that immigration is an ongoing psychological negotiation rather than a static, completed event.

The title itself warrants deeper appreciation. By choosing "Following the Moon to the Maple Land" over explicit prose terms like "immigration," the author favors poetic suggestion over documentary literalism. The "moon" serves as a universal constant linking two distant shores, while "Maple Land" gently invokes Canada through its natural landscape rather than its political borders. This opening choices primes the reader for a narrative focused on emotional topography rather than legal status.

A room of My Own: Lopsided Moon Haiku

lopsided moon ...
eyes fixed on my wife
straddling me

FYI: This haiku could be read as a sequel and a prequel to the following ones respectively:

butterflies mating
my wife's hand made to fit
inside my palm

And

beads of sweat
between my wife's breasts
yet this impulse ...

Added:

slanted moonlight
slow, slow curving of her breast
into my dream

Added:

a box of letters
in dusty attic light
I recover
my young self once caught
in someone's love bonfire

Added:

a queue for gas
out of the blue call answered
by tree swallow song

FYI: A small and striking songbird, the tree swallow is renowned for its acrobatic flight and dazzling plumage. It features glossy, iridescent blue-green upperparts that gleam in the sunlight.

Added:

a white raven
back and forth, back and forth
distant sirens

FYI: White ravens are exceptionally rare in the wild—occurring in roughly 1 in 30,000 birds. North America's two main hotspots for these sightings include:

1 Vancouver Island, British Columbia: The coastal area around Qualicum Beach and Parksville is widely considered the unofficial "White Raven Capital".

2 Anchorage, Alaska: White ravens are occasional, viral sensations in Anchorage.

Added:

A Room of My Own: River Trail Tanka

Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, IV

silver moonlight
drips through weeping willow leaves
the river trail  reeks
where a stray rips the throat
from a bag of rotting guts

FYI: My new writing project, Starlight on the Gutter of Blossoms, applies the violent lens of the urban onihishigitei style to the modern landscape. Inspired by Christine Judd’s "neon lights" tanka, the title hijacks Oscar Wilde’s romanticism—"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars"—and forces that celestial gaze down into the city’s filth to "slay" traditional beauty.

You can read its I, II, and III here.

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, V

the milky way

while two drunks shout and laugh

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, VI

the warbler’s wail
ripples through the morning mist --
the screech of brakes
as a truck grinds to a stop
inches from the toddler

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, VII

the moonlit creek
chatters over mossy rocks
the drainage pipe
spewing vomit after vomit
of neon-blue factory sludge

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, VIII

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, IX

The climate pattern known for intense heat, floods and drought is likely to develop this summer, raising questions about disaster preparedness.

Scientists at the Climate Prediction Center, a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had raised their estimate for an El Niño event this summer from 60% to about 80%.... Forecasters now predict that the coming El Niño -- a warming of the Pacific Ocean that deeply affects global weather patterns -- is likely to be as severe as the one in 2023-2024, which triggered severe flooding and prolonged heatwaves around the world.

Melania, this documentary makes perfectly clear, likes her gilded cage just fine. After all, it lets her produce this movie starring her clothes, her hair, her shoes, and her complexion, and how many women can say the same?

In the film, the First Lady comes across as brittle and materialistic; her interactions with her son and husband are stiff. Instead of baby photos or family mementos, viewers get so many shots of Melania in high heels that it starts to feel “like an OnlyFans account crossed with that meme of Kim Jong Un visiting factories,” Caroline Mimbs Nyce writes in her delightfully cutting review, The Melania Documentary Is “Exceedingly Mid"
