Poetic Musings: Pink Clouds Haiku by Lorraine Pester

a tornado-twist
of pink clouds ...
this time of life

NeverEnding Story, February 17, 2025

Lorraine Pester

Commentary: This is a highly effective haiku. It captures a vivid sensory moment while pairing it with an open-ended, deeply personal reflection.

The striking contrast between the violent movement suggested by “tornado-twist” in L1 and the soft, delicate image of “pink clouds” in L2 creates an immediate poetic tension. The image is simultaneously beautiful and unsettling, suggesting both wonder and turbulence.

The ellipsis at the end of L2 functions effectively as a kireji-like pause, creating a moment of suspension between the external landscape of Ls 1-2 and the inward reflection of L3. The reader is invited to linger over the image before making the conceptual leap to “this time of life.”

L3 then transforms the preceding image into a metaphor. “This time of life” can evoke aging, a particular stage of existence, a chaotic period of change, or a beautiful yet turbulent transition. Because the poem does not specify which, the final line remains open and allows the reader to bring their own experience to it.

Ultimately, the haiku suggests the experience of being swept through a beautiful but turbulent stage of life. Its ambiguity is one of its greatest strengths: the tornado, the clouds, and the “time of life” remain suggestively interconnected without the poem explaining exactly how.

Poetic Musings: Plainclothes Cop Tanka by Lorraine Pester

boy's deck shoes
a paisley tie, pink and torn
compression socks
thin legs wrapped in loose capris
a plainclothes cop in the ladies' room

NeverEnding Story, November 2, 2024

Lorraine Pester

Commentary: Juxtaposed with the detailed description of one's dressing style through a list of items, "deck shoes, torn pink paisley tie, compression socks, loose capris" in Ls 1-4, L5 changes the register from image-based description to a declarative statement: a "plainclothes cop in the ladies' room."

This surprising, even startling statement about a plainclothes "cop" (one of the "most masculine" professions for men) in the "ladies' room," shows something about his sexual orientation or "gender performance/role." It can carry charged implications, and it means the tanka will be interpreted through cultural lenses, such as privacy, gender, surveillance ...

This list tanka also works well as a character/persona tanka. What's left unsaid is at least as potent as what's stated.

Poetic Musings: Rio Grande Valley Haiku by Lorraine Pester

Rio Grande Valley
Mexican olive blossoms
on the wind

NeverEnding Story, April 18, 2023

Lorraine Pester

Commentary: L1 sets the scene while Ls 2&3 are visually and emotionally evocative and symbolically rich. It's because the Mexican olive tree, one of the few native plants in the valley, blooms almost every day throughout the year.

And when evaluated in the geo-sociopolitical context/significance of L1 ("in/famous region" spanning the border of Texas and Mexico), Ls 2&3 work well on three levels, literal, symbolic, and sociopolitical.

Lorraine's haiku about the Rio Grande Valley is a fine example of employing a literary device, "utamakura (poetic place name)"

For further discussion, see "To the Lighthouse" post, "A Rhetorical Device, Utamakura (Poetic Place Names)"

FYI: The following is my haibun about this thematically significant and sociopolitically charged region spanning the border of Texas and Mexico:

"A Tale of Two Laredos"

The fireman from Nuevo Laredo looks at the body, muttering, “This is the 6ooth body I’ve pulled out of the Rio Grande.” There is noisy silence between the two of us as I turn and see a long line of trucks crossing into Texas. We continue to make our way downriver and, upon turning a bend, I see a boy and his dog caught in branches at the river’s edge.

one howl, then many …
