Poetic Musings: Following the Moon to the Maple Land by Chen-ou Liu

for my first Canada Day, July 1, 2003

Name: Chen-ou Liu (phonic);
Country of Birth: R.O.C.;
(Cross out R.O.C. and fill in Taiwan)
Place of Birth; Date of Birth; Sex;
simply more technocratic questions
the Immigration Officer needs to pin down my borders.
He is always looking for shortcuts,
more interested in the roadside signposts
than in the landscape that has made me.
The line he wants me confined to
is an analytically recognizable category:
immigrant. My history is meticulously stamped.
Now, you're legally a landed immigrant.
Take a copy of A Newcomer’s Introduction to Canada.

from Lake Ontario
I scoop the Taiwan moon
distant sirens

Contemporary Haibun Online, 10:2, July 2014

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary: The title and dedication, "Following the Moon to the Maple Land / for my first Canada Day, July 1, 2003," immediately establish a dual physical and symbolic journey. By grounding the piece in a specific national holiday, the author infuses the narrative with cultural resonance, allowing the historical weight of the date to speak for itself without heavy-handed exposition.

The opening lines mimic the sterile, clinical language of official immigration forms. This technical data entry stands in stark, poignant contrast to the narrator’s rich inner life. The parenthetical intrusion, "(Cross out R.O.C. and fill in Taiwan)," instantly injects geopolitical and personal complexity into the scene. Through a simple bureaucratic instruction, the text captures a profound crisis of identity, sovereignty, and displaced history.

The haibun’s emotional core lies in its central metaphor:

He is always looking for shortcuts,
more interested in the roadside signposts
than in the landscape that has made me.

In this layered yet accessible image, "signposts" represent rigid, official categories, while "landscape" embodies lived history, culture, memory, and personal identity. The strength of this passage lies in its emotional restraint. The speaker never explicitly states feelings of diminishment or alienation; instead, the prose trusts the reader to infer the subtle violence of being reduced to a bureaucratic category.

The concluding haiku delivers a powerful, unresolved finish:

from Lake Ontario
I scoop the Taiwan moon
distant sirens

Here, the moon acts as a bridge rather than a barrier. L1 anchors the speaker in their new geographical reality ("Lake Ontario"), while L2 preserves their internal, emotional geography ("Taiwan moon"). The action of "scooping" suggests an active attempt to hold onto one's heritage. Crucially, L3—"distant sirens"—cuts through any potential sentimentality. This auditory disruption yanks the reader back to an unfamiliar, urban present, serving as a reminder that immigration is an ongoing psychological negotiation rather than a static, completed event.

The title itself warrants deeper appreciation. By choosing "Following the Moon to the Maple Land" over explicit prose terms like "immigration," the author favors poetic suggestion over documentary literalism. The "moon" serves as a universal constant linking two distant shores, while "Maple Land" gently invokes Canada through its natural landscape rather than its political borders. This opening choices primes the reader for a narrative focused on emotional topography rather than legal status.

Jan. 29 2026: IDF Accepts Gaza Health Ministry Death Toll of Over 71,000 Palestinians Killed During the War

Although many international experts have accepted the Health Ministry's data as reliable, and even conservative relative to the true death toll, Israel had refused to accept the Health Ministry's count until now

The IDF has accepted the estimate of the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry that approximately 71,000 Palestinians were killed during the Israel-Gaza war, noting that the number does not include missing residents who are potentially buried under rubble.

No state should join any initiative except those led by the United Nations or mandated by it, and those based on international law and the Palestinian right to self determination.

The Peace Council fails on both counts. States committed to the rule of law should push to dismantle it immediately, not join it.

The $45 million advertorial abounds in unintended ironies.

Melania, this documentary makes perfectly clear, likes her gilded cage just fine. After all, it lets her produce this movie starring her clothes, her hair, her shoes, and her complexion, and how many women can say the same?

In the film, the First Lady comes across as brittle and materialistic; her interactions with her son and husband are stiff. Instead of baby photos or family mementos, viewers get so many shots of Melania in high heels that it starts to feel “like an OnlyFans account crossed with that meme of Kim Jong Un visiting factories,” Caroline Mimbs Nyce writes in her delightfully cutting review, The Melania Documentary Is “Exceedingly Mid"

The IDF can expel the residents – poor, weak shepherds – in one week, but the state has been doing it by proxy through an army of minors and criminals, some of them sheep thieves. There are no police,' says Amir Pansky of the group Looking the Occupation in the Eye. 'This is the best documented ethnic cleansing in history. We're recording everything in real time...

According to Ofran and Mizrachi, in the last three years we've been seeing "an annexation on steroids," which includes the expulsion of the local people, the building of hundreds of kilometers of roads and mammoth funding for settlements.

FYI: The "folds of one's smile," clinically known as nasolabial folds, are the natural creases in the skin running from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth... Over time, these folds can become deeper and permanently visible (static lines) due to various factors, including:

Natural aging: The skin loses collagen and elastin, proteins that provide structure and elasticity.

Repetitive facial expressions: Frequent smiling and laughing reinforce the creases in the skin.

And this gembun could be read as a sequel to my tanka prose below:

In one 2018 email, Epstein remarked amid a discussion about Trump’s possible impeachment: “you see , i know how dirty Donald is. my guess is that non lawyers ny biz people have no idea. To the Lighthouse: Magical Realism in Times of Crises

Magic realism or magical realism is a "style of literary fiction and art. It paints a realistic view of the world while also adding magical elements, often blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Fantasy traits given to characters,... help to encompass modern political realities that can be phantasmagorical." (Wikipedia: Magic Realism)

It’s because the magic in magic realism has deep roots in the real, because it grows out of the real and illuminates it in beautiful and unexpected ways.

-- Salman Rushdie

In a war situation or where violence and injustice are prevalent, "magical realist poetry" is called upon to be something more than a thing of beauty.

-- paraphrasing  Seamus Heaney

"Magical Realist poetry" is insurrection, resurrection, and insubordination -- against amnesia of every sort, against every form of oppression, dispossession and indifference. And against the drowning noise of other words.

-- paraphrasing Anne Michaels

There comes a time when silence is betrayal... Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about THINGS THAT MATTER.

-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Case I: "In a war situation"

I've been publishing about the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than thirty poems, one of which was nominated by the Tanka Society of America for the Pushcart Press Competition, 2023.

However, when I started writing poems critical of the Western coverage of the Israel-Hamas War, I've been called a propagandist poet because of my use of the headlines in FYIs at the end of my poems, which were taken from the Israeli oldest and most progressive newspaper, Haaretz (founded in 1918 with an "exposure rate of, sadly, 4.7%," the "third-largest readership" in Israel, below Israel Hayom's rate of 31% and Yedioth Ahronoth's 23.9%).

And to my great surprise, in one case of using the most Israel-friendly Canadian government's news release concerning over civilian casualties in the FYI, my haiku below was called "propaganda"

night turned into orange day
a news host laments
the most feared word, context

Days later, I expanded this haiku into the following haiku sequence as my response to this baseless accusation:

First Casualty

a time for peace
a time for war only...
a twist to PM's mouth

remember, remember
what Amalek did  ...
fireballs burst skyward

night turned into orange day
a news host laments
the most feared word, context

police phalanx
Never Again, Never Again
for everyone

Genocide or not?
bounced back and forth between experts ...
peace candles flicker

(FYI: The title alludes to

The first casualty, when war comes, is truth.

Moreover, I received a warning notice email (after Yad Vashem, Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, made its complaint) below from X, formerly known as Twitter, owned by Elon Musk, who has been accused of antisemitism MANY times,  and most importantly, who now calls himself ‘Aspirationally Jewish’ after his "Rehabilitation Tour" to the "first and only democratic country in the Middle East, Israel, accompanied by its Prime Minister" (The New York Times, Jan. 22

It was all because of my response to Yad Vashem's tweet below for International Holocaust Remembrance Day:

Remember a #Holocaust victim as we approach #HolocaustMemorialDay: https://ow.ly/kc4V50QsRMe

Yad Vashem's #IRemember Wall is a unique & meaningful opportunity for the public to take part in an online commemorative activity ahead of #HMD2024

I posted two Headlines from Haaretz (Jan. 10 and Jan. 22)

#Haaretz, Jan.10:"50 #Holocaust Researchers" Ask #YadVashem ( "Holocaust museum" in #Jerusalem) to Condemn Israeli Public Discourse Calling for #Genocide in #Gaza

#Haaretz, Jan.22: Yad Vashem Is "SHIRKING ITS DUTY" in the Face of Israeli Genocidal Rhetoric

(FYI:

BBC News, Jan. 26: ICJ genocide hearing against Israel ruling [by 17 judges] HIGHLIGHTS:

1. 15-2 The state of Israel shall take all measures to prevent the commission of genocide to Gaza

2. 15-2 The state of Israel shall ensure that the military not commit any acts of genocide

3. 16-1 Israel shall take all measures to punish all public solicitations to genocide

4. 16-1 Israel shall take immediate and effective measures to address adverse conditions to life in the Gaza Strip

5. 15-2 Israel shall take effective measures to preserve evidence of actions impacting the Genocide convention

6. 15-2 Israel shall submit to the court a report all measures taken to follow the orders of this court within one month.

And Haaretz, Jan. 28: Israeli ICJ Judge Aharon Barak Is the Last Liberal Fig Leaf Masking Israel's Anti-liberal Reality,

Aharon Barak supported the World Court's majority position in two of the provisional measures: one instructing Israel to allow essential services and humanitarian aid to the residents of the Gaza Strip and one instructing it to take all available measures to prevent and punish incitement to genocide)

When confronted with this Relentless Character Assassination, I always keep Seamus Heaney's challenging question and last message in my heart:

...The attraction of working for the wretched of the earth was deep, moral and compelling. So what was the private lyric poet to do? Was he or she to just keep to the lyric matter of the self and beauty or was there a bigger obligation?...

Just a few minutes before Seamus Heaney  died, he sent a message, in Latin, to his wife Marie. It said simply: "Noli Timere – Don't be afraid."

However, the most frustrating thing is that in the "interest of peace," the poetry forum, where I've workshopped my poems since its first day, changed its rules to limit what kind of FYI and joshi (prefatory note as a poetic device) regarding the TRUTH about the Israel-Hamas War one, i.e. "I," could use

I wrote the following/first Magical Realist Haibun as a Protest Poem:

Poetry Lies Its Way to the Truth

I am alongside Georgia O'Keeffe on a homemade wooden ladder, suspended from the blood moon. In the orange-tinged sky, she whispers in my ear, "Nothing is less real than realism. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things."

Staring at the smoky ruins from high above the missile ranges, I compose the following haiku:

white sand beach
miles north of a refugee camp
now-flattened

a Gazan's first and last
appearance on TV
bombed-out hospital

death count debate
a peace vigil stretches
into foggy night

Arab-Jewish
peace protest banned again ...
my haiku blocked for life

Case II: "where violence and injustice are prevalent"

In this year of elections (4 billion people will cast a vote in over 60 countries), the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol not only finds the country in "what arguably ranks among the highest stakes political, legal and constitutional junctures in America's history," but also exerts its far-reaching influence in the November elections as well as at international level.

Special Feature: Poems Selected for SocioPolitical Reflection on the Meaning(s) of Remembrance Day

War does not determine who is right – only who is left. -- Bertrand Russell

Perhaps the greatest tribute we can pay today to those who served, sacrificed, and died in war is to dedicate ourselves to finding other means than warfare to achieve our goals and settle our disagreements. --  Karl Nerenberg, "On Remembrance Day we can honour those who sacrificed without glorifying war"

                                                                                        Remembrance Day

                                                                                        Chen-ou Liu

The core meaning of what "remembrance" is very personal to so many people and what they've gone through. Do they have family members who served? Did they serve? But over time, Remembrance Day has become a performance of patriotism and nationalism other than a true Remembrance.

-- Dr. Walter Callaghan, PhD candidate in Medical Anthropology at the University of Toronto and a veteran who served in the Canadian Armed Forces, who does not wear a poppy because he believes the politicization of poppies has diminished what the poppy means to them.

And according to  Dr. Callaghan, the white poppy predates the red poppy. "The first instance of the white poppy dates back to the British-Russian Crimean War. The white poppy was a commemoration of the dead on both sides... It's not completely anti-war but it stands for peace. The idea is that we can't, as a humanity, keep doing this."

The following is a set of selected poems for you to rethink the meaning(s), of Remembrance Day (For further discussion, see Yahoo!News, Nov. 10: "Do you wear a poppy for Remembrance Day?: Some call it a 'performance of patriotism', others a symbol of peace"):

Special Feature: Poems Selected to Challenge these "Talks" at COP 27

My Dear Friends:

Delivering for people and the planet (Really!?)

From 6 to 18 November, Heads of State, ministers, and negotiators, along with climate activists, mayors, civil society representatives and CEOs are meeting in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for the largest annual gathering on climate action.

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP27 – "builds on the outcomes of COP26 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the climate emergency" – from urgently reducing greenhouse gas emissions, building resilience, and adapting to the inevitable impacts of climate change, to delivering on the commitments to finance climate action in developing countries... excerpted from United Nation, Climate "Action:" COP27

Below is my poem about COP26 and its "outcomes:"

America is back, our president was here

The President's gas-guzzling 20-car motorcade wound through the streets of Glasgow for the summit. When the motorcade arrived under the media spotlight, a giant WWII-style Climate Siren blasted in the morning chill, opposite the grandiose entrance.

The president opened his speech by launching an attack against the Chinese leader for not attending the summit. One day later, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson hit back with a video clip; in it, the President's aide had to wake him up several times as he dozed off at the conference. Eventually, the two biggest polluters called a truce by agreeing to hold a bilateral talk annually, which will start next year. The agreement was reached one day before the end of the summit.

Five days after signing the climate action pledge, the earth-shaking news --"US auctions off the largest oil and gas drilling leases in its history" -- hit the headlines across the globe this cold, windy morning.

Failed Haiku, 7:75, March 2022

FYI: Al Jazeera, Nov. 9, 2021: Climate activists decry ‘false solutions, fairy tales’ at COP26: While corporations promote carbon trading, critics say it is just a scheme to keep profiting from burning dirty energy sources.

(For my poetic responses to COP26, see my "Special Feature" post, "Haiku and Tanka Selected for the COP26 Summit)

Pissed off by these empty talks at the COP26, I decided to start a new, one-year writing project, titled No More Fairy Tales, to challenge these "talks and solutions" presented at the COP27.

Here are first three entries:

Reuters, Nov. 7: "At COP27, climate change framed as battle for survival"

"Humanity has a choice: cooperate or perish,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres told delegates, urging them to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels and speed funding to poorer countries struggling under climate impacts that have already occurred.

And The Tyee, May 23, 2019: Canada’s Cars Are World’s Worst Gas Guzzlers

A recent report by the International Energy Agency shows that Canada’s vehicles have the highest average fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre driven. They are also the largest and the second heaviest in the world...

And CBC News, Nov. 14: Canada gets low marks for its efforts to tackle climate change in the new Climate Change Performance Index presented at COP27, scoring 58th out of 63 countries evaluated.

But the federal government says they’re starting to make changes to improve the country’s standing.

And CBC News, Nov. 16: The Arctic community, Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada, falling into the ocean

The Arctic hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., is collapsing into the ocean as it loses up to a metre of coastline each year. The people who live there are in a race against time to preserve their way of life — and their community — before it is washed away.

Powerful storm waves and thawing permafrost causing erosion are collapsing Tuk’s coastline by about one metre each year.

The hamlet of about 1,000 people, mostly Inuvialuit, are in a race against time to preserve their way of life — and their community — before it is washed away.

In about 50 years time, “the health care centre, the college and even half of the cemetery will be gone,” said Whalen, unless there’s physical intervention.

These comments drew criticism not only from Republicans, but from [the "most powerful] Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin" of West Virginia [49th place for average family income and 46th for percentage of families in poverty]. The senator, whose state still generates roughly 90% of its electricity from coal, called the president's comments "outrageous and divorced from reality."

"President Biden's comments are not only outrageous and divorced from reality, they ignore the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs"

Divorced from reality, Indeed! This is America, the second most polluting country in the world.

The former head of the Environmental Protection Agency was Andrew R. Wheeler, the most influential coal lobbyist (For more, see Public Citizen, July 12, 2018:The Coal Lobbyist Now Running the Environmental Protection Agency)

FYI: The New Yorker, Nov.21, 2022: Climate Change from A to Z

It was thirty years ago that the world’s “so-called leaders” gathered in Rio de Janeiro for the so-called Earth Summit. Everyone agreed that radical change was needed. To avert disaster, global CO2 emissions, which were then running at around twenty-two billion metric tons a year, would have to be reduced, eventually almost to zero...A follow-up conference of the parties, or cop, took place in Kyoto in 1997. By then, annual global emissions had risen to twenty-four billion tons....By 2015, emissions had increased to thirty-five billion tons a year. At that year’s cop—No. 21—held in Paris, it was decided that, at last, really and truly, it was time to get serious...

this year’s, in Sharm el-Sheikh, just concluded—and to speak loftily about “net zero” and “a low-carbon economy.” But nothing will change, and, as a result, everything will change...
