Special Feature: Selected Poems for Reflections on the Fourth Anniversary of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine


Four years ago today, Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, bringing devastation, heartbreak and senseless loss of life.

Every day since, the courage and determination of Ukrainians defending their homeland have continued to inspire people around the world. I have had the honour of meeting refugees who left everything behind to seek safety in Canada, and I am continually inspired by their resilience and strength.


Independence 

"Dear Chen-ou, I hope this email finds you well. Share with you my family photo, which was taken this glorious morning." 

In the photo, my friend, his wife and two daughters, wrapping themselves in the flags of blue and yellow, stand with arms linked before a row of rusty Russian tanks on Liberation Square. 

My friend used to be a Surrealist poet, known for his purposeful use of "obscure and unwieldy verbiage." He sent me the following poem at the end of his lengthy and furious email a week after the Russian invasion.

in smoky twilight
the head of I cut off
the roof of M falling through --
I paint poetry with screams, 
the last phase of lyricism

His emails now are short and straight to the point, and often attached with photos to speak for his mood or state of mind, like the one he sent me today. Under his family photo, there is a caption that reads:

If Russia stops fighting, there will be no more war.
If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no more us.

no man's land

of ravens scratching 
at the soldiers' hearts

Volodymyr Zelensky says Vladimir Putin "has not achieved his goals" and Ukraine will do everything to achieve peace and justice, on the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion

It has been a long, hard and deadly four years. Ukraine is under pressure from Trump’s America to give up strategic land that Russia has failed to capture despite sacrificing thousands of its troops.

At least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since 24 February 2022 according to Zelensky, but the toll is likely to be higher. BBC analysis estimates Russian military deaths could range from 243,000 and 352,000...

FYI: Yom Teruah, also known as Rosh Hashanah or the Feast of Trumpets, is a Jewish holiday marking the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the High Holy Days. Its name translates to "day of blasting" or "day of sounding the shofar" (ram's horn). The central element of Yom Teruah is the sounding of the shofar, which consists of 100 blasts during a traditional Rosh Hashanah service. The teruah sound itself can mean an alarm, a signal, or a shout of joy.

The conflict and confusion that he creates are purposeful, not incidental. It is a calculated cruelty. And it takes the combination of grievance, vulnerability, and pervasive public ignorance that allows a strongman symbol like Trump to rise to the surface by channelling these feelings into rage and the lust for retribution. It’s not the price of eggs.

On April Fool's Day morning, I got a warning/Not Prank (see my first warning detailed in "To the Lighthouse: Magical Realism in Times of Crises") from X, formerly Twitter, now owned by Elon Musk, who has been accused of antisemitism MANY times,  and most importantly, who now calls himself ‘Aspirationally Jewish’ after his "Rehabilitation Tour" to the "first and only democratic country" in the Middle East, Israel, accompanied by its Prime Minister" (The New York Times, Jan. 22):

FYI: Ls 1&2 of the second tanka allude to the last stanza of one of the most read/popular Palestinian poems, "Identity Card," written by Mahmoud Darwish, poet of Palestinian resistance (1941-2008) and author of The Butterfly Effect, 2008, who died believing in the power of his poetry to make a difference.

To conclude today's April Holy Fool's Message post, I would like to share with you a relevant excerpt from Michael Enright's essay, "Seamus Heaney's last words to his wife"

In the course of the funeral tributes, his son Michael told the mourners that a few minutes before he died, the poet sent a message, in Latin, to his wife Marie. It said simply: "Noli Timere --- Don't be afraid."
 
Poets know about human pain and human fear.

It is part of their mandate to write about our fears, not necessarily to assuage them, but only to describe them accurately so that we know what we are dealing with.
    
We seem to be steeped in fear these days, marinating in the uncertainty that something dreadful is about to happen. 

In his poem "The Cure at Troy", Seamus Heaney wrote;
    
History says, don't hope
On this side of the grave.
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.

But the Biden administration said it was concerned over the Israeli passage of the law.

FYI: "Safe Room" (Hebrew: "miklat")  was required by a 1992 Israeli law to install in all new buildings.

According to the clay pot artisans, Gaza has some of the best soil for making this cooking pottery (Business Insider, Nov 5. 2019). And in Gaza City there is an area called Al-Fawakhir, best known for selling clay pottery. Locals buy clay pottery for use in cooking, as home decorations, serving food, storage, or as gifts (Middle East Eye, Aug. 3 2023)

FYI: In Feb., 2022, a new ruling made it officially legal for Toronto residents to build "backyard or garden suites" (a little bigger and more furnished than the outdoor/yard sheds one can buy in The Home Depot) as a "form of housing" (because of the crisis of affordable rental housing)

And usually built between 1800 and 1850 in Newfoundland and Labrador, a saltbox house has two stories in the front but one in the back,  giving it an uneven roof that is steeper one side).

A Room of My Own: Journey of a Free Soul

(FYI:Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, said Monday she would take up her husband’s work and fight for their country and against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In a video posted on her husband’s YouTube channel, Navalnaya asked her husband’s followers to join her in taking up his fight and honoring his legacy.

This 9-minute video is titled “I will continue the work of Alexei Navalny,” and the description reads, “An appeal by Yulia Navalnaya. Alexei’s work will continue. The fight for a free Russia will not stop.”

By killing Alexei, Putin killed half of me, half of my heart and my soul. But I still have the other half, and it tells me that I have no right to give up...

But Putin also took Navalny away from you, where in a colony in the Far North, beyond the Arctic Circle, in eternal winter, Putin killed not just a man, Alexei Navalny, but together with him he wanted to kill our hopes, our freedom, our future...

I will continue the work of Alexei Navalny. Continue to fight for our country. And I invite you to stand next to me. To share not only the grief and endless pain that envelops us and does not let go. I ask you to share my rage. Rage and anger towards those who dared to kill our future. I address you with the words of Alexei, in which I believe. FYI: BBC News, Feb. 16: Putin critic Alexei Navalny, 47, dies in Arctic Circle jail

Seen as President Vladimir Putin's most vociferous critic, Navalny was serving a 19-year jail term on charges widely considered politically motivated.

He was moved to one of Russia's toughest penal colonies late last year.

Most of the Russian president's critics have fled Russia, but Alexei Navalny returned in January 2021, after months of medical treatment. In August 2020 he was poisoned at the end of a trip to Siberia with a Novichok nerve agent.

His last Instagram post to his wife two days ago said there were thousands of kilometres between them "but I feel that you are near every second". He leaves two children, Dasha, who is studying in the US and Zakhar, who is still at school.


The Hill, Jan.16: Navalny in final message: "You’re not allowed to give up"

Prompted at the end of the Oscar-winning documentary “Navalny" to deliver a message to his Russian supporters, Navalny said, “If they decided to kill me, then it means we are incredibly strong.

We need to utilize this power to not give up, to remember we are a huge power that is being oppressed by these bad dudes. We don’t realize how strong we actually are. The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing, so don’t be inactive,” he says with a stern look before flashing a smile at the end of the film.
