Special Feature: Selected Poems for Reflections on Remembrance of 9/11

My Dear Friends:

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, I would like to share a few poems reflecting on how we—Americans and non-Americans alike—remember this tragedy: not only through the lens of individual grief, but also against the heavy sociopolitical and geopolitical landscape shaped by the “War on Terror.”

false dawn
in a bead of grass dew —
September 11

another year
another “thoughts and prayers” —
9/11, grayer

And after ...

Facing south, a sea of white empty chairs, 2,753 in all, flooded the lawn of Bryant Park, Midtown Manhattan. One for each person. Not a breath of air. This burden of hushed silence...

blinds drawn
against the light of dawn
9/11, yet not

FYI: This is a sequel to my haibun below:

An Unofficial Story, A Haibun
for Oskar

ink-black:
smoke trails a life
from the north tower

Another sleepless night. Winter moonlight on the empty side of her bed. From the bedside table, she picks up A Place of Remembrance: The Official Photo Book of 9/11. She stares at the book for a moment. The tears roll down her face as she rips out some of the pages. With a sigh, she puts the torn-out pages in reverse order. When she flips through them, dozens of people are flying through the windows back into the building.

Comment by cattails Haibun Editor Sonam Chhoki: The power of Chen-ou Liu’s haibun, "An Unofficial Story for Oskar" lies in its closing sentence: “When she flips through them, dozens of people are flying through the windows back into the building.” It is amazingly evocative image that has echoes of redemption and freedom from the tyranny of time.

Retracing and Reflecting
for those who have journeyed heavily across the landscape of the heart

the light of dawn
on September Twelfth
the time it takes
for leaves zigzagging
to the dust-choked ground

off the tower
one after many sped downward —
Muslim lives
and our world ripped by the day
before and forever

the footprint
of each tower that once stood
now surrounded
by four walls of water and grief
an Afghan woman's look

FYI: The dedication alludes to Melvina Young's remark:

Sadness takes its own time. It can't be hurried along. It can't be rushed. It "moves heavily across the landscape of the heart" until time and love can carry it further into the distance.

Added:

Ground Zero silence --
yet this golfball-brained man
closes his eyes, snoring

Poetic Musings: Prayer Plant Haiku by Barbara Sabol

another shooting
leaves of my prayer plant
unfurl

Modern Haiku, 53:1, Winter/Spring  2022

Barbara Sabol

Commentary: By juxtaposing human tragedy with the silent, automatic rhythms of nature, this sociopolitically conscious haiku creates a powerful tension.

The plant’s name in L2 evokes the phrase “thoughts and prayers,” often criticized as an empty, passive response to gun violence. The irony of the plant’s “unfurling” in L3 is deepened through its biological blindness.

At night, the prayer plant folds its leaves upward like hands in prayer; during the day, it unfurls them. By showing the plant unfurling after a shooting in L1, the haiku suggests several possibilities: the absence of genuine, action-oriented prayer; the reopening of a wound; or nature simply moving on, indifferent to human trauma.

The plant acts out of pure instinct — nyctinasty — highlighting the cold contrast between a predictable natural world and a chaotic human one. This irony resonates especially in the United States, a country with more guns than people, where mass shootings have become part of the daily landscape.

Pope Leo XIV,  his first Easter Mass

And The Nation Magazine, April 13, 2026: Trump’s Deranged, One-Way Feud With Pope Leo

“I have no fear neither of the Trump administration, nor of speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel,” the pope told reporters on his plane as he headed for a visit to Algeria and several other African countries.  They asked about Trump’s comments on Truth Social, and Leo responded: “It’s ironic—the name of the site itself. Say no more.” He added: “I do believe the message of the Gospel—‘blessed are the peacemakers’—is the message that the world needs to hear today.”

And this is a sequence to my tanka set below:

Poetic Musings: Dew and Easter Sun Haiku by Chen-ou Liu

each
drop
of
dew

Easter
sun

reprinted in Serbian Haiku Anthology edited by Dajan Bogojevic

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary: The vertical arrangement functions as a temporal slowing device. By guiding the eye downward one word at a time, the haiku mimics the gradual formation—or falling—of dew. This measured descent builds a subtle rhythmic tension that is ultimately resolved by the two-word closure of “Easter / sun,” which breaks the pattern and establishes a broader, more stable visual and semantic base.

The physical space between “dew” and “Easter” operates as a cut (kire). This pause invites the reader to bridge the gap between the minute and the immense, the earthly and the celestial. The haiku’s power lies in this juxtaposition (renso): the fragile, transient nature of “dew” set against the enduring, expansive presence of the “Easter sun.”

In both literary and biblical traditions, dew signifies divine grace and spiritual renewal, while also embodying transience—it vanishes soon after dawn. By isolating “each drop,” the haiku foregrounds the individuality and fragility of a moment, or even of the soul itself. The “Easter sun,” while functioning as a seasonal reference to spring, carries deeper symbolic weight. It evokes resurrection, illumination, and triumph over darkness. Within Christian and older solar traditions, the sun signifies constancy and divine presence; paired with Easter, it becomes a figure of enduring spiritual light.

On a technical level, the haiku suggests a phase shift. The “Easter sun” is the catalyst that will inevitably dissolve the dew. Symbolically, this transformation can be read as an ascent—the movement of the transient into the eternal, the earthly into the divine.

FYI: "Zohran Mamdani is considered the second Muslim mayor of a major Western capital, following his inauguration as the 112th Mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026. While New York City is not a national capital, it is often grouped with cities like London as a "global capital" or "major Western capital" in political discourse. By this definition, Mamdani follows Sadiq Khan, who became the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital when he was elected Mayor of London in 2016."

And some relevant passages from  his inaugural address:

I have been told that this is the occasion to reset expectations, that I should use this opportunity to encourage the people of New York to ask for little and expect even less. I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations.

Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try...

I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical. As the great senator from Vermont once said, “What’s radical is a system which gives so much to so few and denies so many people the basic necessities of life.”

Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued a statement arguing, “President Trump’s unauthorized military attack on Venezuela to arrest Maduro—however terrible he is—is a return to a day when the United States asserted a right to dominate the internal affairs of all nations in the Western Hemisphere. The history is replete with failures, and doubling down on it makes it difficult to the claim with a straight face to other countries should respect the United States’ sovereignty when we do not do the same.”

Haaretz, Analysis, Jan. 5: A Groundbreaking Coup in Latin America? Maduro's Capture Continues a U.S. Tradition Dating Back to the 19th Century

Amid persistent inflation, he's trying another, oft-repeated policy – imperialistic behavior in Latin America: Between 1898 and 1994, the continent saw 41 instances of U.S.-engineered regime change.

Trump is a unique president in many respects, but in this case, he didn't deviate from the decisions of John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and others who overthrew regimes they disliked. The U.S. perception of Latin America as its backyard has been one of the most prominent characteristics of its foreign policy for generations.

However, Trump is facing domestic challenges like persistent inflation and the Epstein files that continue to make headlines. Under these conditions, foreign policy is a simple, magical solution, certainly if it's in the form of an impressive military operation that expresses U.S. power.

Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCVII: "prayers in the smoky air"

her prayers
hanging in the smoky air ...
a bent woman
holds the Gazan night sky
on her bony shoulders

Added: Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCVIII: "if only just a nightmare"

Gazan night sky
a ghastly shade of red ...
a white-haired man
murmurs, if only this were
just a nightmare

Added: Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCIX: "blood-stained bird cage"

smoky ruins ...
a blood-stained bird cage
with the door open

Added: Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, CCX: "a headless doll"

smoky skies
between two skeletal houses
a headless doll
