FYI: The New York Times, March 12 2026: Odds Rise That El Niño Will Soon Bring Weather Extremes

The climate pattern known for intense heat, floods and drought is likely to develop this summer, raising questions about disaster preparedness.

Scientists at the Climate Prediction Center, a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had raised their estimate for an El Niño event this summer from 60% to about 80%.... Forecasters now predict that the coming El Niño -- a warming of the Pacific Ocean that deeply affects global weather patterns -- is likely to be as severe as the one in 2023-2024, which triggered severe flooding and prolonged heatwaves around the world.

A Room of My Own: Penetrating Silence Tanka

Yellowing Memories, I:

Father's long stare
and penetrating silence
before he walks away ...
under piles of my textbooks
a new copy of Playboy

FYI: Yellowing Memory is my new writing project, and its first entry is stirred by and written in response to Playboy Enterprises's Jan. 23 announcement: "The reimagined PLAYBOY magazine will arrive on Barnes & Noble newsstands nationwide on February 10, 2025. "

The new issue features: Cover Model Lori Harvey, Playboy interview with comedian and actress Nikki Glaser, and the Playmate of the Year.

And this tanka could be read as a sequel to my tanka below:

at high noon I see
a woman pulling down
her windblown white dress ...
Marilyn Monroe's smile
held my young self each night

Added: On the Brink of Trumperica, XVII
written in response to the heated exchange between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Convicted Felon Donald Trump and his lackey J.D. Vance at the White House.

the barrage
of blaring lies and shit-words
from his meaty mouth ...
between Trump's pauses
Vance's thunderous echo-fart

FYI: The noun shit-word has been obsolete since its recorded usage only in  the Middle English period (1150—1500) (shit-word entry, Oxford English Dictionary). However, during today's "meeting" at the White House, the Convicted Felon and his lackey "Make Shit-Word Great Again."

Added: On the Brink of Trumperica, XVIII

A Room of My Own: God, Rid Me of God

slanted sunlight
through stained glass windows
as I pray hard ...
finally tired of me
Time leaves me alone

jab by jab
right hook after left hook
at its head
I shadowbox with God
in my last Bible study

unshackled
from my childhood beliefs
I'm a passing thought
in the mind of God
who forsook his son on the cross

tired and alone
in the sunlit pew in a church
by the roadside ...
for hours my heart-to-heart
with the Angel of Silence

FYI: The title is a paraphrase of German theologian, philosopher and mystic Meister Eckhart's prayer.

Added:

AddedOn the Brink of Trumperica, XV

Living in the Land of Promise

just a dream, and yet ...
the mountain lion roaring
to flocks of sheep,
once elected as your King
I'll be vegetarian

in misty dark
the ghost of tomorrow whispers
Trump Forever, Trump Forever

the people of Trump
                  by the people of Musk
for the people of the SuperRich ...
sun-bleached stars and stripes
atop the Capitol fencing

surge after surge
of woke mind virus ...
wearing a crown
the Convicted Felon alone
in an Oval Office window

Weeks into the war in Gaza, the Israeli army designated the area of Al-Mawasi a humanitarian safe zone, instructing Gazans to evacuate there. Soon, the 16 square-kilometer strip along southern Gaza's coast became the only safe area for over 380,000 displaced Palestinians.

Nine months into the war, the Israeli army launched a military attack on Al-Mawasi, killing at least 90 Palestinians and injuring 300 others, including, according to the IDF, the commander of Hamas' Khan Yunis Brigade, Rafa'a Salameh.

Poetic Musings: Solitude Tanka by Hifsa Ashraf

interweaving
the strings of silence
with moonlight
until this solitude
becomes a symphony

Take 5ive, 1, 2021

Hifsa Ashraf

Commentary: Enhanced by the effective use of metaphors (interweaving/weaving "together;" moonlight, Buddhist metaphor for enlightenment; strings of (meditative) silence), Hifsa's tanka builds, line by line, to a thematically significant and multi-sensorily effective ending that reveals the theme of a "symphony of silence."

Her thought-provoking tanka reminds me of the following passage on the difference between loneliness and solitude:

Loneliness is small; solitude is large. Loneliness closes in around you; solitude expands toward the infinite. Loneliness has its roots in words, in an internal conversation that nobody answers; "solitude has its roots in the great silence of eternity..."

"In solitude silence becomes a symphony." Time changes from a series of moments strung together into a seamless motion riding on the rhythms of the stars. Loneliness is banished, solitude is in full flower, and we are one with the pulse of life and the flow of time...

-- Kent Nerburn, Simple Truths

And it might be interesting to do a comparative reading of my tanka below where the "mythological art of weaving" as a "writing metaphor" is explored:

this winter mist ...
like Penelope I weave
and unweave
a shroud of words
to ward off loneliness

Special Feature: Myths and the Creative Imagination, Atlas Poetica, 2015

FYI: The ancient art of weaving is a profound "metaphor for recognizing health and wholeness as the primary state, and overcoming the blockages of seemingly broken connections."

As Ontario’s population ages and relies on immigration for expansion, children represent a shrinking percentage of the overall total. Some critics have summed up the failures in a single word: housing. As in there simply isn’t enough for families, neither in suitable forms nor at attainable prices.
