A Room of My Own: Parting Words Tanka

so much of life
grows clearer with the years —
her parting words
yet grit like sand in my mouth
whenever I repeat them

Added:

newly divorced
I stare at a blue moon
through the skylight—
still her side of our bed
holds the hollow shape

Added:

an alley stray
howling at the blue moon
nostalgia
like a drunken shadow
that dogs my immigrant past

Added:

blue moon rippling …
on the Pacific shore
I wonder:
the life I left behind,
the life I struggle with

Added:

words fall short
of what the heart can tell —
yet on my tongue
that first hidden love's name
leaps into the spring air

Poetic Musings: Ulysses Butterfly Tanka by Chen-ou Liu

shadowing
a Ulysses butterfly
to this mountain trail
of many twists and turns ...
at last Time leaves me alone

Honorable Mention, 2025 Fujisan Tanka Contest

Japanese Translation:

幸運の瑠璃蝶追いて山道をゆけども時間にとり残されて

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary: The tanka frames pursuit as a meditative act, with the speaker “shadowing” a Ulysses butterfly whose vivid, elusive flight draws attention away from the self and into motion. The butterfly’s name invokes Odysseus, subtly transforming the mountain trail’s “many twists and turns” into a miniature odyssey shaped by wandering rather than destination. As the trail mirrors both the butterfly’s erratic path and a life’s nonlinear course, time stretches and loosens through sustained attention. The ellipsis marks a pause of duration and effort, allowing the reader to feel the long following before the poem’s quiet turn. When “Time leaves me alone,” the moment reads as a hard-won release, achieved through immersion in beauty, movement, and myth-inflected presence.

Reading More and Writing Better: Oz Tanka

Corner of Oz
enclosed with lush greenery
near the waterfront ...
time-wave after time-wave
takes me there through dreams

FYI: L1 alludes to the Land of OZ, a fantasy world introduced in the 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. And The Wizard of Oz is long considered LGBTQ, the first gay coded movie: "The struggles faced by Dorothy, Toto, and friends, especially against the Wicked Witch of the West and her flying monkeys can metaphorically mirror the difficulties of coming out. How the group of outcasts worked together likewise mirrors LGBTQ people who create new chosen families." For more, see Manish Mathur, "Talk Film Society," Nov 4 2019: Reel Pride: The Wizard Of Oz (1939)

This tanka could be read a sequel to the following:

On the Brink of Trumperica, IX

the White House
pronounces, only two sexes...
trans youth trapped
between black-and-white Kansas
and rainbow-colored Oz

A Room of My Own: Time Span Tanka

in blossom rain
my pink-haired daughter laments,
we'll all die one day...
I reply, let's hope
the time span makes life unique

FYI: This could be read as a sequel to my tanka below:

monotonous fall
of winter waves
on the sandy beach ...
Father murmurs to me,
We'll die one day, each alone

Atlas Poetica, 29, 2017

Added:

at his white fence

Added:

Poetic Musings: Cherry Blossom Rain Tanka by Chen-ou Liu

a girl
pirouetting alone
in the cherry blossom rain
as if tomorrow
has yet to find her

German Translation:

ein Mädchen
dreht Pirouetten allein
im Kirschblütenregen
als ob ein Morgen
sie noch vorfinden müßte

Chrysanthemum, 28, 2021

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary by Jeana Pierson, "Chrysanthemum: The Connecting of Nature, Culture, and Language"

This [tanka] by Chen-ou Liu (Chrysanthemum, 28, page 31)  has such a distinct image. I can see the girl turning through her pirouettes while beautiful, pink flowers fall around her. The juxtaposition of the falling and the turning is almost chaotic, but also gentle and serene. I like how the author uses the term “cherry blossom rain.” It really puts into perspective how many and how fast the flowers are falling. I also enjoy how the author makes the point to mention that she is dancing alone. She is not performing for anyone or trying to show off, she is just dancing in the moment. In that moment, she feels infinite or as the last two lines state, “as if tomorrow has yet to find her.” It is almost as if time freezes and all that moves are her and flowers.

The word that sticks out to me in the German translation of this haiku is Kirschblütenregen. This word is kind of a compound word. I say kind of because it is a combination of three different German words, something that does not have a name and does not exist in the English language. Kirsch translates to cherry, blüten translates to blossom, and regen translates to rain. Altogether it is quite a mouthful, but it perfectly conveys that image the author, Chen-ou Liu is trying to show. I think this word is quite unique and also beautiful. I love the image of the raining cherry blossom flowers and I think it is so cool that the German language can combine that into one word, one image, and one feeling. I definitely think the line with Kirschblütenregen brings together the entire haiku and gives it it’s tone.

A Room of My Own: Melting Clock Haiku

FYI: The first part of the word comes from the Greek kákisto(s), meaning “worst.” So kakistocracy means “government by the worst.” The earliest known use of the word was in the 1600s by Paul Gosnold, a loyalist to King Charles I during the English Civil War.

And Daily Beast, Nov. 21: Jon Stewart Knows Why Trump Is Picking All the Worst People for His Cabinet

For Trump, it’s not a “downside” that his Cabinet picks “will not be sufficient stewards of these agencies,” Stewart said on the latest episode of his Weekly Show podcast. The point is that they are trying to “dismantle” the agencies themselves.

Poetic Musings: It is always three o'clock in the morning by Chen-ou Liu

It is always three o'clock in the morning

day after day.

the ghostly past
lurking around the corner
of my mind ...
with a scalpel of words
I stab into its heart

However, my immigrant past is never ...dead -- gone and forgotten. It is not even past.

Distressed and alone by the bedroom window, in the wake of a dream about a Taiwan blue magpie disappearing into the dark forest, I hear Time passing in the sound of snow.

Ribbons, 19:1, Winter 2023
contemporary haibun, 19, 2024
(annual anthology showcasing a "state-of-the-art selection of haibun, tanka prose, and haiga from journals around the world")

Chen-ou Liu

Commentary (emailed to me by Tanka Prose Editor, Liz Lanigan):

A short and powerful piece of self reflection where the poet seems to be preparing themselves for an intense look-back at family history.

Love the final sentence… “I hear Time passing in the sound of snow”  -- Carole Harrison.

I think you published a little masterpiece: Chen-ou Liu’s  “It is always three o’clock in the morning”. It is the piece I am copying into my journal. I don’t feel like analysis, but it’s haunting and meaningful and I love the format which is innovative I think. -- Gerry Jabobson

Note: The run-on title alludes to the following remark:

But at three o'clock in the morning, a forgotten package has the same tragic importance as a death sentence, and the cure doesn't work-- and in a real dark night of the soul it is always three o'clock in the morning, day after day.

― F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Crack-Up"

And “The dark night of the soul” was a phrase first used by the Spanish mystic St John of the Cross in 16th century.

Poetic Musings: River Tanka by Kala Ramesh

is time always new   .?
then what was that river
that passed
by you yesterday
in which I'm standing now

the forest i know, 2021

Kala Ramesh

Commentary: Allusive/in response to Heraclitus' teaching on ever-present change as being the fundamental essence of the universe as stated in the following famous saying:

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

Kala's thought-provoking tanka explores the concept of ever-changing time, L1 (is time always new   .?) in the context of a relationship: Ls 2-5, what was that river/that passed/by you yesterday/in which I'm standing now. If (the river of) time is ever-changing, then are we (you and I in ls 4&5) the same persons in the same relationship?

The tanka doesn't give an answer or a hint. However, the interesting punctuation marks at the end of L1 stirs the reader's imagination. First, a blank space lets time and the line flow onward. Then, a period stops the flow, followed immediately by a questioning of the full stop.
